Recently, our Webzine spoke to Marc-Antoine Robertson (lead vocals, acoustic guitar) of the indie band SoHo Ghetto about the band’s music. We enjoyed the conversation we had with Marc-Antoine as he was kind enough to answer our questions about the band. Here is what formulated from our online conversation from one of the hottest bands currently out in the music industry.

Isaac: I just listened to one of your songs from your CD. What was the inspiration for making your new album?

Marc-Antoine: I wrote a good portion of this album while I was living abroad in France. It was stuff that needed to come out and ultimately it was the change of scenery that inspired the construction of the songs, but my life up until that point that inspired the lyrics.

Isaac: Who were your influences?

Marc-Antoine: I'm the type of writer that's influenced by any event large or small it could be a short moment in time or some sort of grand pilgrimage and all the people that have come into my life in between. Musically there is no end to the list of influences; I love Ryan Adams, Jeff Buckley, Steve Earle, The National, the list goes on and on. If I like what I hear, I am influenced.

Isaac: What do you consider to have been the highlight(s) and lowpoint(s) of your career to date?

Marc-Antoine: It took me a year to get my 6 piece band together. At this juncture, everything has been a high point, I've yet to tackle a low point.

Isaac: Brief history about your background plus the style of music you play.

Marc-Antoine: I've been writing creatively for a very long time and received my first and only guitar lesson from my father when I was 14 he taught me 3 chords and the rest is history. It is a very exciting time for country music and Americana right now and I feel that I am on board with that resurgence. I was always classified as singer/songwriter but the more I play with a band and write the more country sensibilities come through. I don't operate under any strict guidelines for creating the music. I had bands in high school and while I was in university in Halifax. I didn't find my voice and begin to evolve until recently in the last few years. The style of music is something I just settled into without realizing it; I found comfort in my creations and went with it. My style is whatever people say it is.

Isaac: How easy is it to gets gigs for you as an artist? What is the live music scene like in your area?

Marc-Antoine: I live in a small city with a lot of bands on the east coast of Canada. The music scene is great but it’s tough to get your foot through the door, because of its size and all the musicians packed in it can be cliquish. At the same time, if you write quality stuff like anywhere else people will eventually start to pay attention. Like most emerging artists we can get a gig it’s getting people to that gig that can be challenging.

Isaac: What do you think of the state of Indie music at the moment? Do you listen to radio much at all? Has the Internet helped music grow or hindered it in your opinion?

Marc-Antoine: I think it’s a very exciting time for music right now because anyone can get their stuff heard if you’re willing to put in the work, be somewhat aggressive and saturate the internet with as much material as you can . The radio is a great resource for finding new music and staying in touch with international music community.

The Internet has only helped me and my band grow. It is the best resource for spreading you music around or as an artist finding opportunities and outlets for your music. Thanks to online radio and online press kits I have fans everywhere and I haven't been everywhere. Absolutely anything is possible and you never know whose listening.

Isaac: If you could create a fantasy band - what would be the line-up and why?

Marc-Antoine: Tough one...Crosby, Stills, Nash, Young and Robertson. Yeah I like the sound of that. They were a huge influence growing up and on my music as well.

Isaac: What CD's do you currently have available and where can they be purchased from?

I just released my first EP this past November it’s called “The Parisian EP” you can get it at CD Baby or Amazon.

Isaac: Where can fans access your music, videos, blogs, and anything else about you online?

Marc-Antoine: www.myspace.com/sohoghetto is where you can hear our stuff. We just finished some off the floor recordings that will be posted online in the next couple of weeks. We've also been featured on various compilation CD's with a lot of other talent they'll be available this summer at www.mpbandwars.com or www.bandchiproductions.com. We'll also be posting new pictures and a video as well.

Isaac: Message to your fans?

Marc-Antoine: Thank you fans. Keep googling the shit out of us. Get on board! We love that people are listening and the vibe is great so just keep listening.
